Sarah Crane O'Neill, PLLC
Whether you have experienced the foster care system or adoption first hand, or someone close to you has, I would be honored to support you. In the best of cases, foster care and adoption involves great experiences of love and connection, but there is always also an experience of loss, whether it feels vague and somewhat subconscious or incredibly vivid. And worse, experiences can be frightening and traumatic. It can also be complicated building a sense of identity and belonging. Your feelings, thoughts, and experiences about your foster care or adoption story may change greatly over your life, and perhaps you’re coming to counseling to seek support around a new issue you are facing. I have worked with folks across the lifespan with a wide variety of experiences such as open adoptions, closed adoptions, and inter-racial families.
I come to this topic with a lot of humility, curiosity, and respect for individual experiences. After I earned my Masters in Social Work, I worked at Amara, a child welfare agency in Seattle, for four years. I worked as a case manager supporting people who were becoming foster parents and through entire placements with children, including sometimes to adoption and beyond. I also worked with a number of birth parents. I facilitated support groups and trainings for foster/adoptive parents. I draw from training in family systems, attachment theory, and psychodynamic theory. For more information on how I work with parents, please see my “Parenting Support” Area of Focus page.
